Dealing With Bedtime Anxiety With Relaxing Narratives

Dealing With Bedtime Anxiety With Relaxing Narratives

These Are Stored In The Mind Like Playlists Or Cassette Tapes

Bedtime anxiety is one of the main causes of insomnia, There is a technique which can help with anxiety. It consists of thinking of relaxing and fun situations and constructing narratives and scenarios based on them. These are remembered as playlists or cassette tapes. They can be travels, sports, cooking, or music, among others. When anxiety prevents falling asleep, the idea is to think in one of the stored playlists and play it, instead of thinking about what is causing the anxiety. In this way, the brain replaces anxious thoughts with relaxing thoughts. Since these playlists are already stored in the mind, there is no need to construct them from scratch. This technique is similar to another called cognitive shuffling, which is based on brain science. Additional techniques are meditation and mindfulness, but these are more intense.
