Frequent Nightmares Can Be Treated By Image Rehearsal Therapy

Having frequent nightmares is also known as dream anxiety disorder, which occurs in approximately 4% of adults. One of the treatment procedures is called image rehearsal therapy. It is used when nightmares are related to traumatic memories generated by stressful events, as in the case of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The treatment consists in modifying the content of a nightmare by creating a new set of positive images and rehearsing the rewritten dream scenario while awake. There are additional treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, hypnosis, and prescription medications. Frequent nightmares can cause clinically significant distress, impairing quality of life. Impairment, and can aggravate an underlying mental illness, such as depression or anxiety.
